What Is World Oral Health Day And Why Is it Important?

Did you know that oral disease impacts about 3.5 billion people on a global scale? It’s a serious issue that continuously harms people around the world, and yet, there are ways that oral health conditions can be treated before they become problematic.

The issue here lies in the fact that some people don’t know how to care for their oral health. That’s where World Oral Health Day is hoping to change things.

This is an event that comes around once per year and was created specifically with oral health in mind.

If you’re curious about what this means or how this event can help with such an important  issue, keep reading below!

What Is World Oral Health Day?

World Oral Health Day (WOHD) is an annual world wide event held annually around the world – in 2022, it is on March 20th. It was created as a way to help spread understanding on why good dental and oral hygiene is so important.

WOHD is meant to help people learn why their oral health matters, how they can have good oral health, and how bad oral health can lead to further problems.

The main purpose of this event is to help people feel empowered to take control of securing their oral health with the tools and knowledge they need to do so.

Why WOHD Is Important

People located in many countries around the world still don’t fully understand how important oral health is to overall health. Humans need to have good oral and dental health in order to have good physical health.

Oral health diseases are a huge health concern in many countries around the world, and without the right information and resources, the problem will continue to get worse.

As oral diseases progress, these conditions can severely impact someone’s health and quality of life with pain, discomfort, low confidence, depression, and social isolation.

In addition to this, other health problems can stem from poor oral health, including:

  • Infections
  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Pregnancy complications

Many of the oral health problems that people suffer from are preventable, and people can get treatment for these issues when they are still in the earlier stages.

For this reason, WOHD is aimed at helping people learn about what those options look like and what they should know to avoid further oral health complications in the future.

Who Celebrates World Oral Health Day?

Anyone can celebrate this holiday because it is created for every person on the planet. Each of us can benefit from practising better dental and oral hygiene habits, so each time you do something to benefit your oral health, you’re celebrating this holiday!

World Oral Health Day is organised by the FDI World Dental Federation. This is an organization that has an overarching goal of providing optimal oral health for people around the world.

Each year when this event comes around, a new campaign is launched leading into the next holiday that focuses on bringing awareness to oral health concerns.

This year, observe World Oral Health Day at Dentique Dental Spa with an appointment! Take pride in your smile, and remember that your oral health is important.

The History of World Oral Health Day

First established in 2013, World Oral Health Day has now been held annually for 10 years as of 2022. Originally, it was celebrated on September 12th. However, this date was later changed to avoid a conflict with another important FDI event.

The date wasn’t chosen at random, however! Healthy adults need a total of 32 teeth and 0 dental caries, which is where the 3/20 date comes from.

The date of March 20th is also meant to reflect that seniors need at least 20 natural teeth when their life ends for good oral health and that children should have 20 baby teeth before permanent teeth come in.

Each year, WOHD has a specific theme as well, with the theme of 2022 being “Be Proud of Your Mouth.”

Plenty of businesses and facilities in cities around the world participate historically with WOHD as well by holding special events and activities for members of the community. Look for local events near you so that you can get in on the action this year!
